Many email, Facebook and other social media accounts are getting hacked with weak passwords and brute force attacks.

It is strongly recommended that you use passwords that include all of the following.   Lower case letters, upper case letters and a special characters for your passwords.

It is also recommended, but rarely followed, to not use the same password for all of your accounts but to use different passwords OR generated, secure passwords.

There are many different programs out there that help save your usernames and passwords for all your websites and have them available for retrieval if needed via your cell phone or computer.  My first favorite password program is called LastPass or 1Password

Also recommended is the use of what’s called two factor authentication or two level authentication.  This can be used by receiving a text message on your cell phone, as well as a password or using a program on your cell phone that generates a new number every 30 seconds.  This has been used by Banks and secure organization for many years.

If you have a family member that is tech savvy and they can help you set this up, it is highly recommended.  We can also help you set this up, but this is naturally a more expensive approach as we are a fee for service organization.

Our goal is success with technology and having your account hacked can be painful, expensive and cause an un-needed black eye.   A little simple proactive safety will help guard against this.

Please share this with anyone you know that may be the next “victim” and stay safe online.

Happy technology use from the MCS Staff,
